Tirupattur is about 25 kms from Trichy on the Chennai - Trichy NH 45. While going from Chennai, you have to reach Siruganur and take a right there into the service lane. There is a big board to guide people travelling by road. After turning right, the temple is about 5 kms down the road. While coming from Trichy, Siruganur is about ten kms farther from Samayapuram, and one has to turn left at the Siruganur Service lane.
The entrance has a Five Level colourful raja gopuram . When you go into the beautiful and cool Veda mandapam with the dwajasthabam you notice Nandiswara resting under an intricate Rudhraksha Pandal, a sight not found in any other temple.
The next mandapam is called Nada Mandapam wherein the seven musical pillars are present. There are seven entrances to cross over to reach the sannadhi of Sri Brahmapureeswara. He is called so since he changed the destiny of Brahma. To the left of the Nadha Mandapam, is the Brahma Sannadhi. The idol is huge- almost six feet and sitting on a lotus flower in Padmasana. Brahma is considered as the Adhidevatha of Guru Bhagavan, and therefore, here he is covered in turmeric paste. The turmeric is also given as prasadam. If you visit the temple around 7 am in the morning, you will be able to see both the Nirmalya Darshan as well as alankaram. Worshipping this Brahma, wil change the destiny of the worshipper for the beter. But not everyone will be lucky enough to come here. Only if their destiny allows can it happen. Which is why he is called " விதி இருப்பின் விதியை மாற்றும் பிரம்மா"
The story goes like this:
Brahma was very vain as he had five heads like Shiva and he was the creator of all beings. In order to curb his vanity, Shiva plucked out one of his heads whereby Brahma lost all his thejus or glory. Since he lost thejus he also lost the art of creation. In order to be relieved of the curse, Lord Brahma came to Tirupattur and installed 12 (Dwadasa) Lingams and prayed to them. Pleased with his devotion, Lord Shiva appeared before him with Goddess Parvati, who gave him back his lost thejus which is why she is called "Brahma Sampath Gowri" here. Shiva also gave another boon to Brahma. Just like how he had changed the destiny of the one who was responsible for writing everyone's destiny, Brahma would have the power of changing the destiny of all those who worshipped him here, for the better. Goddess Brahma Sampath Gowri can be worshipped in a seperate sannadhi outside the main temple.
Usually in temples, the devotees stand on both sides of the main deity and worship. In this temple, it is important that the devotee falls within the direct deeksha of Lord Brahma. Therefore, they are asked to stand directly in front of him so that their destiny can be changed for the better.
Another very important feature of this temple is the Jeeva samadhis of Saints Padhanjali and Vyakrapadhar. While Shiva performs the Ananda Thandava between the horns of Nandi, there are two saints who witness it - Padhanjali and Vyakrapadha. Both their jeeva samadhis are found here. Padhanjali was the creator of Yoga Sutra. His jeeva samadhi can be found to the left of the Brahma Sannadhi. A covered enclosure has been made around it convenient for those who want to come here and meditate. The vibration is extremely powerful here.
The jeeva samadhi of Saint Vyagrapadhar is found about half a km away from the main temple.
The Stala Vruksham is Magizha maram which is about 150 years old and is found in the complex outside the temple which houses 7 out of the 12 lingams. It is believed that Sage Pathanjali often left his physical body and stayed in the astral form for many days in this magizha maram and performed penance.
There are four lingams in the main temple
1. Brahmapureeswarar - Main Deity
2. Pazhamalainathar - Opposite to the Jeeva samadhi of Saint Padhanjali
3. Padhala Eswarar - Every temple that has a Jeeva Samadhi will have a padhala lingam. Here it is present near Chadikeswara
4. Suttharathneswarar - near the navagrahas
One lingam in front of the Amman Sannadhi:
5. Thayumanavar
The other seven lingams are found in the adjacent campus:
There are Pancha Bhootha Sthalangal in Tamilnadu namely - Kanchipuram, Tiruvannamalai, Kalahasti, Thiruvaanaikaval and Chidambaram. But this temple has all lingams of all five elements and saptharishis in one place. Lord Brahma has installed them all at one place so that the devotees who come here get the benefit of having workshipped the pancha bhoothas and the saptharishis when they worship at this temple. Each one of the shrines are different in architecture and size and the avudaiyars are also different some have the komukham on the left and others on the right. The Kailasanathar shrine has a 16 pillared hall and a huge nandi before it.
There is also a tank here called the Brahma Theertham...which is supposed to have been created by Lord Brahma to perform puja to the Dwadasa Lingams but the current status in which it is maintained leaves a lot to be desired.
Every year in the tamil month of Panguni (March-April) for three days, namely 14, 15 and 16th the Sun God is said to worship Brahmapureeswara. As I mentioned earlier, there are seven entrances to reach the main deity's sannadhi. It is a miracle that the sun's rays cross these seven entrances and fall directly on the lingam from 6.15 to 6.45 a.m.
The jeeva samadhi of Sage Vyakrapureeswara is situated in Kasi Viswanatha swamy temple attached to the Brahmapureeswarar temple about half a km away. He has installed the Kasi Vishwanatha Swamy in this temple. Once there was no water in Tirupattur for performing the daily pujas. Sage Vyakrapadha saw Airavatha, the white elephant of Lord Indra, carrying water for the puja of Lord Jambukeswara of Tiruvanaikaval. He asked Airavatha to give him some water for the puja. The elephant refused. The angry sage who had hands and feet of a tiger dug the ground with his claws till water gushed out. He used this water to perform the puja. The tank so created by him is called " Pulipal Theertham". Bathing here on full moon day cures one of all skin ailments. The Jeeva samadhi of Sage Vyakrapadha is found encased in glass.
Both temples are open from 7 am to 12 pm in the morning and from 4 pm to 8 pm in the evening.

Hi Priya,
ReplyDeleteThank you for all the information about Sri Brahmapureeswara temple, Tirupattur. On July 26, 2012, I had the wonderful chance to great Shiva Kshetra and have darshan of Lord Brahmapureeswara and Lord Brahma. also, I had visited Lord Kasi Vishwanathar temple nearby. ( You may add this info: Locals informed me that it is recommended to visit and have darshan of Lord Kasi Vishwanathar and then go to Sri Brahmapureeswara darshan. Lord Brahma is indeed magnificient and you can feel his power and his aura. This temple is very powerful and vibrations are very spiritual conducive for removing obstacles. Thank you for your tour as it helped me plan my visit to this great temple in July 2012.
Thank you very much for an informative and useful article and we are visiting the temple this Sunday (19 aug 12).Regards Nagarajan
ReplyDeleteThanks for this information Priya. Reading this information made me plan a trip to Trichy. I visited Brahmapureeswara on 5th Aug 2012. The place is really magical. Please continue writing such blogs and wish you all the very best for your work.
ReplyDelete- Shalaka
Very informative. I got an opportunity to visit this temple with my parents.
ReplyDeleteAs said, Brahma re-writes the fate of the people who visits this temple.
I also had an opportunity to visit the 'Perumal temple' near Brahma temple. Though very small, the perumal here is very powerful.
Our family had a prayer and me and my parents were praying perumal for the same.
As a sign of blessing, the bhattacharyar uttered a word standing in the sannidhi - 'Neenga nenaikaradu 45 naatkal la nadakum. Swamiki thirumanjanam seiyaren nu prarthanai pannikongo. Avar 45 days la nadathi vappar'. To everybodys surprise, trust me, it happened within 45 days.
Unfortunately, we missed the contact number of the bhattacharyar and now, donno how to contact them.
If anybody has the contact number, please share it in the blog.
Vidhya, Chennai
Thanks Ms Vidhya for sharing this information. Can you remember the name of the perumal at the temple?

ReplyDeletePlanning to visit soon thanx for ur effort taken to share the information
ReplyDeleteWe had the blessings of Brahmapureeswarar to make the visit on Thursday the 21st March 2013. Some times, the driver of the tourist vehicle is very helpful. After having seen us visiting temples after temples from Tuesday, on our return journey from Trichy to Chennai, he suddenly asked us whether he can escort us to one another temple at Thirupathur on the way. We said yes- we were at this beautiful temple. As some one said in these columns, we have been destined by Brahmapureeswarar to visit him and receive his blessings. We were never aware of the existence of this temple, before. The separate sannadhi for Lord Brahma and his posture on Padmasana is splendid. It is a huge one and we felt lucky and blessed.
ReplyDeleteWe have not been told by anyone there regarding Kasi Viswanathar temple and we missed it.
We visited this shrine on Thursday the 21st March 2013. ASfter seeing us visiting temples after temples from Tuesday, our tourist vehicle driver, on our way back to Chennai from Trichy asked whether he can take us to one another temple. We said YES and then were there at Brahmapureeswarar temple. It is an wonderful temple. The separate sannadhi for lord Brahma in Padmasana posture is very beautiful and it is huge vigraham. As some one said in these columns, we have been destined to visit this temple and received the blessings of Lord Shiva, Parvathy and Brahma. And also Pathanjali Muni.
ReplyDeleteDevotees visiting Trichy or down South by Road should not miss to visit this temple. We missed visiting Kasi Viswanathar temple as none guided us properly in this temple
Hii can someone tell me where exactly this temple located if I search in Google map it shows me near ambur there is a tirupattur but near tiruchy I don't find one pls guide
ReplyDeleteIf you are going from Chennai, on NH 45 turn right at Siruganur. There is a board which clearly shows the name of Thirupattur Once you enter the service lane on the right and take the road to the village the temple is about 6 kms from NH 45. If you are travelling from Trichy, after the Samayapuram Toll gate, you will have to turn left at Siruganur.

Please add in ur blog about the Bus services that, the First bus to the temple from Trichy Sathiram Bus stand is at 7.10 Morning only (Route N0:98).
Then there is no proper arrangement for Bathrooms and Toilets, which someone will find bothered.
My Best wishes for ur good deeds,

How old is this temple ? can anyone give some more details of the construction. Thanks to our Government which is doing its best to repair and maintain.

ReplyDeleteThanks for the informative write-up on this unique temple. I was advised by a friend to visit this temple as I am at a crossroad in my life. My question to you is, did you experience a change for good in your life after you visited the temple just as Lord Brahma got rid of effect of the curse from Lord Siva?
Thanks and regards

ReplyDeleteHai I am from Malaysia. My mom in law and bro in law visited this temple last year. They advised that they see many positive changes and recommended me and family to go. We plan to go in May 2014. Hope to get his blessings and also visit the jeeva samadhis.
ReplyDeleteHi Priya!
ReplyDeleteThanks for wonderful information provided about the temple. We had very good dharshan
Just now we are starting from the temple.
The temple is open till 12.30 PM.
I was feeling bad that there is no water in brahma theertham.
Also we request the people to visit the perumal koil which is very much nearer to the brahma temple.
Vidhiyai maatrum varadharaja perumal. Perumal looks so very beautiful and it is sad to see such a very old and poeerful temple in such a poor stage.
We heard from Rajesh Battachariar that the temple was built in 8th century. And Purushothamar vigraham is placed outside in open place without sny shelter who id said to be 2000 years old.
It sjould be our responsibility to try to get some sort of financial aid to such temples which are too old without any support.
Hope people start going to these temples too.

Deletethank you madam :) visited yesterday 1st time. awesome
ReplyDeleteNamaskaram Priya Ma’am,
ReplyDeleteI had the good fortune of coming across your blog “Aalayam Kanden” and came across your wonderful article on Tirupattur temple. I visited this temple along with my parents on 22nd May 2015.
We reached the temple at around 07.15 am but, were told that the Abhishegam will commence for Lord Brahma only around 9-9.30 am.The Gurukal over there told as since they are extremely unstaffed and are underpaid, they are unable to hire more personnel to take care of the temple. We had the good fortune of watching the first Deepam of Sri Brahmapureeswarar (Lord Shiva), which I attribute to the Lord’s grace only.
From there, we visited the Kasi Viswanathar temple and paid our respects to Sage Vyakrapadhar’s sannidhi. Also, we had good dharshanam of Lord Kasi Viswanathar and his consort over there.
From there, we visited the Varadharaja Perumal temple, which is situated about 2 kms from Sri Brahmapureeswarar temple, as pointed out by bloggers earlier in the blog, he is called “Vidhiyai Mattriamaikkum Varadharaja Perumal”. Before starting the Abhishegam, the gurukal shared an interesting bit of mythological trivia about the temple.
The story goes like this “When Lord Brahma lost his 5th head and his powers of creation on account of his pride and was praying to Lord Shiva, the Vahanam (Vehicle) of Lord Brahma , the Swan was extremely upset to see his master’s state and shared his grief to Garuda, the Vahanam (Vehicle) of Lord Vishnu. It seems it was Garuda who advised the Swan to pray to Lord Varadaraja Perumal. So, the Swan sat, facing East , meditated upon the Lord, chanted the Vedas that its master (Lord Brahma) had forgotten and earnestly prayed and moved by the devotion of the Swan’s prayers, the lord granted the Swan its wish and blessed Lord Brahma with his former glory with his overall wellbeing”.
It is interesting to note that the Gurukal told that whereas Lord Brahma only changes the destiny of the person who is standing in front of him, Lord Varadaraja Perumal is the one who grants the boon of blessing of the person’s overall family well-being, his ancestors, forgiving any sins that may have been inadvertently have been committed that may have caused the person any troubles in his life.
The Gurukal went to say as far as the fact that you have managed to see Lord Varadaraja Perumal and seek his blessings, consider yourselves to have been blessed as the Lord will definitely bring a change to the lives of the people and the people’s family who have the good fortune of having the darshanam of Lord Varadaraja Perumal.
The Lord is with his 2 consorts Bhumidevi & Sridevi in all their glory. Also, while doing pradakshina, one should visit the Lord Purushottamar, outside the sannidhi. Devotees who visit Sri Brahmapureesewarar should definitely come and visit Lord Varadaraja Perumal temple too as it is a beautiful sight to behold.
Finally, when we came back to Sri Brahmapureesewarar temple just in time to see Nirmalayam,we managed to see Lord Brahma in all his resplendent glory covered entirely in Turmeric paste from Head to Toe. It was a beautiful sight to see, one which is for a lifetime.
Finally, we also managed to visit the Ayyanar temple which is around 3,400 years old!!! And had wonderful dharishanam of Lord Ayyanar as well.
I remembered you had mentioned in your blog that “only if the fate permits” can one be lucky to come and visit Sri Brahmapureeswarar temple, fact which the gurukal also mentioned to us.
In this regard, my heartfelt thanks to you for having written such a wonderful article which I was fortunate to come across and managed to visit this magnificent temple.
I came out a thoroughly satisfied and am hopeful of a turnaround in my life as I feel lucky to have been able to visit such a rare temple, perhaps the Lord had considered this was the appropriate time to summon me in his presence and grant me his darshan !!!.
May the Lord grant you his choicest blessings for undertaking such a noble endeavour.
Hi Priya,

I have no words to express my experience when i visited this amazing temple of Bramha. In brief let me tell you, an old Saddu came up to me and asked my name and then told me exactly what I had come there for I was shocked and with tears and goosebumps heard to him and he said I will get what I thought I lost. I will definitely share what happened as soon as receive/get what I am looking forward too. He also said I will visit the temple again but with joy and not with grief as I did this time. I went there last month (June 2015). This LORD will give me for sure and I will happily share the whole story its unlivable just hang in there, I know I will be back soon.. Go with a clean heart and good cause your prayers are truly to be granted. Who was that old man? was he Bramha himself??
ReplyDeleteI visited temple of Lord Brahma Im very happy
ReplyDeleteI visited this temple along with my family. I am very Happy...I can see changes in our family. I will visit this temple again ...
ReplyDeleteI was lucky enough to visit the temple on 31/05/2016. After getting down at Trichy Main Bus station, we hired a taxi for to and fro. It costs me around Rs.1100/-. Lot of vibrations. When we went to the temple, it was hot sunny evening. And after darshan of Lord Shiva and Brahma, there was heavy down pour of rain and got fully drenched when we took darshan at Parvathi Shrine. A miracle indeed...
ReplyDeleteAnyone aware of buses from Tiruchi Railway Station?
ReplyDeleteWe have to visit all the temples on same day?ie kasi viswanathar..varadaraja perumal koil and Brahma pureeshwarar temple
ReplyDeleteCan my husband perform the pooja on behalf of our son who is residing in USA
ReplyDeleteNice information and nice photos Priya. me and my family visited the temple on 18.8.2015. Frequent Buses are available from Trichy Chatram bus stand. But we arranged a cab from Beecabs Car Rentals Trichy . Very good writing sense due to which you explain details about this places perfectly. What a nice blog with a lot of information here. Thank you so much
ReplyDeleteHi Mam, thanks for the detailed information and also to all the bloggers in this page. i have a question here. I was told by my friend that there is another temple nearby which we need to visit before visiting this temple. but he could not recollect the name. Kindly share if you know the details. otherwise can we visit directly to this temple? regards.
ReplyDeleteThere are two other temples the Varadarajaperumal temple and Arangetra Ayyanar Temple apart from the Kasi Viswanathar temple in Tirupattur. One can directly go to the Brahma temple too. Else first visit the Arangetra Ayyanar and then go there. There are no rigid rules regarding this.
DeleteExcellent information. Thank You very much.
