Poongavanathamman Temple, Putlur

The entrance of Poongavanathamman Temple
This is probably the only temple where the Goddess has manifest herself  in the natural form of an anthill complete with face, eyes, dainty eyebrows, parted lipts, hands, legs, and a pregnant belly. It gives you goosebumps as you circumambulate around her in the narrow and poorly lit space among the several hundreds of people who throng this temple everyday to seek her blessings.

Picture of Goddess Poongavanathamman
Lord Shiva and Parvathi were walking from Melmalayanur towards Ramapuram ( the place where this temple is located, which subsequently came to be known as Putlur because of the Goddess manifesting herself in the form of a Putru - an anthill). This place was a forest those days full of neem trees. Parvathi tired after the long walk, sat down and asked Lord Shiva to fetch her some water. Lord Shiva went searching for water but could not find any nearby. He had to go to the river Coovam ( looks like it had drinkable quality water then!) to bring the water. It started raining heavily and the river was getting flooded. So he had to wait a while for the rain to subside. Tired of waiting for the Lord, and exhausted with hunger and thrist, the Goddess lay down on the floor and an anthill (புற்று) grew over her. She became one and the same with the anthill.
Lord Shiva returned shortly after and found that Parvathi had permanabtly stayed there. So he too stood beside her and is called thandavarayan. Probably this is the only amman temple where you can find a nandi before the sanctum sactorium and this is because of the presence of Shiva behind the goddess.

Nandi in front of the Sanctum Sanctorium
The temple, as I said is always crowded. People come and pray here for childbirth and other wishes. They usually buy five lemon and bangles from the shops outside. One lemon is taken by one of the several old ladies who can be found outside the temple. It is believed that one has to remove all "drishti" (casting of evil eye) before entering the temple. So these women circle the lemon thrice around your head, and ask you to crush it under your left foot. This is supposed to remove all dristi from you. On entering the temple, there is a trident ( trishul) on which three of the remaining lemon are pressed on.

Offering lemon at the Trishul

Then you move to worship the nandi, and enter the mandapam to go towards the sanctum sanctorium. One can see that the ancient temple has been modernised over time by laying glazed tiles on the walls and floor. Actually it would have been better if the original architecture had been retained and well maintained.

Pair of Scales in front of Sanctum Sanctorium
We find a huge pair of scales here, where devotees who have been blessed with children offer sugar, banana etc. equivalent to the weight of the child. As the serpentine queue moves slowly towards the sanctum sanctorium you wait with bated breath. The main sannadhi is small, dark and crowded. There is a strong stainless steel railing affixed all around the goddess so that no one touches and damages the structure. It is difficult to see very clearly through this railing. Just behind the goddess, through a small window like structure, you can see thandavarayan looking a little sad that he could not quench his wife's thrist in time. As you circumambulate and move towards the front portion of the sanctum sanctorium, you hold your breath in awe. The goddess completely covered in turmeric paste looks magnificient. The eyes, eyebrows, the parted lips, the visibly pregnant belly all look so natural. The bangles and the last lemon are offered here. The poojari takes your bangles and gives you others as prasad. He rolls the lemon now smeared with kumkum from a stone near the goddess's feet, and the devotees collect it in the pallav of their saree. Lemon garlands are also offered and returned with her blessings and people keep them in their vehicles, shops, pooja rooms, or over their front door as a charm. On coming out, we find another huge anthill ( this does not have a human figure)to the right of the sanctum sanctorium under the stala Vriksham - Neem Tree. People who seek childbirth, tie miniature cradles near this anthill or pieces of pallav of their saree in anticipation of the fulfilment of their desire.

Cradles tied above the second natural anthill
and on the Sthala Vriksham
It is also very common for people to stay overnight here on full moon days. A special prayer is conducted at 5 am the next morning for these people who stay awake and pray through the night.
Location of the temple: This temple is near Tiruvallur.
How to get here: It is very easy to reach here by train. From Central one has to take a train, bound for Tiruvallur, Tiruthani or Arakkonam, and get down at Putlur station.  Make sure it is not an express which stops only at limited stations. From there the temple can be reached either by walk or share auto.
By road: On the tiruvallur road, after crossing Nemam, go straight. There will be a board on the right saying Putlur. Just a few feet away, there would also be an ambedkar statue on the left side of the road pointing to the right. Take the right turn here. A bridge is being constructed. Just before the bridge, there would be a small mudtrack to the left. Go down that track. Very soon, you will reach a railway gate. The temple is about half a km from this railway gate. There are several share autos available to take the visitors at Rs.5 per person. Tuesdays, Fridays, Sundays and full moon days are extremely crowded here.

  1. We had an interesting experience here. Once we started from home at noon after lunch and my wife on the way felt sick and was vomitting. Sometimes she used to be like that when we start in the afernoon after lunch and with the car ac. But this time it looked very bad and I thought of returning back. It was an Avani Sunday and so there was a hude rush in the temple. In the front mandapam there was no air circulation and with so many people, I thought she is going to have a tough time (she already felt very sick in places without any ventilation since she is little asthmatic) but to my surprise, after the circumambulation of the amman, when she came out, all her symptoms of sickness had gone away and she was very fresh indeed. I was totally surprised. After that we had a peaceful tour of many temples around Thiruvallur.

  10. Dear Revathi,

As far as I know, any day is auspicious for Poongavanathamma. Fridays, new moon and full moon days are extremely crowded here. For childbirth, one has to go to the temple for nine weeks. In the first week, you have to take a lemon, place it in the feet of the goddess, and make a cradle out of your saree pallu and tie it on the branch of the neem tree over the anthill outside. After 11 circumambulations around the shrine, take the lemon home and eat it. Continue this for nine weeks. When you go to the temple the poojari is kind enough to give you all the details. Prayers for your wishes to be answered.

  28. Dear Friend,

Faith and belief can move mountains but one has to be patient and accept the consequences of Karma. If you are doing your MBA now, then you could not have been too bad in studies. I have a feeling you lack confidence. Believe in yourself and pray to Amman too...put in hard work and effort and you will succeed! My prayers for you and your family!

  47. Hi Priya,
First let me convey my heartiest appreciation for your efforts and congratulations on your success in Aalyamkanden.

I am desperately (i mean every letter of the word) trying to find an end to my misery of searching for my Kuladeivam. All my ancestors who know about it are no more and my father faintly remembers as 'Poonganam'.
We belong to Chetty community (ayiram vysar vadambars NOT arya vysiar). My inquiry with other chetty communities reveal that mostly 'Amman' such as Angalaparameshwari or Selliamman are Kuladevata of Chettiars. I am confused and lost. Do you have any info to help me out?

I am basically from bangalore. When my mom got married she was told by my grannie that our kula devathai was pungavanthamma, but nobody knew where the temple was as by papa family had migrated to karnataka 4 generations ago.

My mom always said we should find the temple and make our visit and pray.

  58. Thank you for the detailed coverage. I am planning to visit the temple and pray to the Amma for my children - my eldest daughter who is divorced after an abusive marriage and we are praying for her to get married and be happy and have children after so many years of pain, my second daughter who is desperately trying to have a baby , and my son who is also married and we hope he and his wife have a baby very soon - we are in our sixties and have seen much sorrow in life and are yet to see our children enjoy real happiness with healthy beautiful children of their own. I am beginning to lose hope of enjoying the happiness of having grandchildren during our lifetime.
We are from Mumbai and cannot visit Chennai often. So I hope we can have darshan of Putlur Amman this time and pray for her blessings for our children. Please pray for us if you read this. Thank you.

me n my husband both are from Odisha n we are not familiar with tamil ... n new to chennai too.... we are married for 5 yr now n don't have baby till now...
so we decided to visit the temple for blessing ....though we do not understand tamil but still our puja completed very smoothly its just like goddess help us n one pujari really help us to do the formality .... yesterday was sunday its was really crowed we didn't know there is a express que too but unknowingly we are in that que... i thought its her blessing only to guide us and put us in express line no doubt that line also takes an hour or two....
one experience i want to share which really make goose bump when i really remember that moment ..... while entering temple we have no idea what to do we only brought 5 lemon, some neem, flower garland,,, chamber n bangles.... we enter the temple after crushing the lemon on trishul ...we r proceeding..toword the temple old old lady come to me n asking for saree.... n see show that place where spree r available which are already offered to amman...its near to the entrance of the temple only... so i agree n get one which she selected ... then i feel like to take one for me also... then i make payment n she show me the spree she selected ... then me n my husband proceed for parikrama... that time i look back to find that old women n she was not there... whole time i was thinking about that women n some time discuss it about my husband its surprising ...after one parikrama...one men come n help us to do the proper ritual...as we are unknown to it we took the advise though its very difficult to understand then again one person their explain us in english ....its just felt like amman wishes for all situation n show us the right way of doing poja.... its was hot yesterday ...its really difficult me to do the last 2 parikrama of 11 parikram of the temple caring all puja stuff ...where my husband find 4 n 5th parikrama are really difficult for him... but we did its with all our heart ... got the blessing.....

yesterday only we visited the temple n really we r feeling great ,happy, possitive n don't know something really good...
one experience that really make goose bump that we felt yesterday:
with little knowledge about all procedure of puja n temple we visisted... i only read the blog with that much idea we went... we too 5 lemon ,bangle, chamber,n neem leaves n flower garland... after crushing the lemon on trishul we r preceding toward the temple that time one old women came n ask for saree i agree n she show me where to get that saree .. its near the entrance where already offered saree are in sale.... she selected one n that time i also feel like taking one so i took one for me also.... after making payment she show me the one she selected n we sorted for parikrama sudden like look back to find that lady but she was not there the whole time i was thinking about her n sometime i discusses about her with my husband too but i never able to see that old lady again in the temple parmises... so while doing the parikrama we n really don't know what to do ..again one men came n explain the procedure n thing should be done ..as we r new n unknown we took the advice its really difficult to understand the language but again amman blessing showed n one person explain us in english...
i felt its her wish and she only showed us n guide us how to perform puja over there....
yesterday was sunday and its really hot n crowded...we started our 11 parikrama for my last 2 parikrama are really difficult whereas for my husband 4th n 5th was... but with all out heart we completed that parikrama n and on Q... unknowingly we stand on express line while entering the garvaghriha we realize we are in express Q....by that time its already 2 pm n we wear in Q for hr or two....we got the blessing n happy..

  69. Hi,

I recently visited the temple on my way to tiruvallur. I have never heard about this temple before and we went as my driver said this temple is beautiful & ad we are nearby, we can visit once. I did offer lemon and prayed for my wishes. But my wish has nothing to do with pregnancy. After reading this blog and comments. I was curious to know if only pregnancy related wishes will be granted. Does anyone have any experience to share.
